Pakistan's new Media Dictionery

Advertising:

A very important phenomenon in the Pakistani electronic media, where little, irritating films about fairness creams and mobile phone connections become the lifeline of big, irritating seths running really irritating TV channels. Also, the constant source of that wonderfully poignant line, ‘choti si break,’ which, however, may last as long as a military dictatorship in Pakistan.

Asif Ali Zardari:

A custom-made punching bag with prominent teeth for talk show… Continue

The minimum Requirements of a happy life

We spend our whole life in the pursuit of happiness. It is our inalienable right to do so. Happiness is elusive; just when we believe we have achieved it, the bar is raised, the dues increase, the rules change. Perhaps we are chasing the dream of happiness in all the wrong places. There are three minimum requirements for a happy life. If you never become rich or famous, if you never achieve the level of success you envision for yourself, you can strive to acquire the attributes of faith, hope… Continue

A True Muslim

A true Muslim is “One who loves for the sake of Allah alone and hates for the sake of Allah alone; and whatever he gives for the sake of Allah alone; and whatever he withholds, withhold for the sake of Allah alone, indeed, he perfects his Imãn.” (Abu Dã’wood).

Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) explains that to be a true believer ones love and enmity, affections, relations and transactions should have only one purpose; to seek Allah’s pleasure. Without this one’s Imãn will not… Continue

“Islamic Greeting”

I have, on occasion, come across Muslims who are sincere but ignorant of some of the finer points of Islamic lifestyle according to the traditions of the Holy Prophet (may Peace and Blessings be upon him). This however, is easy to do in this day and age where there are so many forgotten traditions of the Holy Prophet which if we saw today we may think they are some strange bidat! One of these forgotten traditions is one of the most basic and fundamental elements of our dear religion, the… Continue

Globetrotting Tears and Smiles

Peshawar was once the city of glamour and gaiety, thrill and shrill, romance and vengeance; similarities and contrasts. Lying within a horse-shoe ring of mountains at 1,138 metres above sea level, it is one of the oldest cities of Pakistan.

For its historical monuments and archaeological wealth, varied ethnography, customs and traditions, natural beauty and pleasant environment, the enchanting city was dubbed as the ‘Paris of Pathans’ by Lowell Thomas. Open through the Khyber Pass to… Continue

Unity, Faith, Discipline

Mohammed Ali Jinnah, once asserted that our country was founded upon the principles of “Unity, Faith, Discipline,” However, the order of his words have long been debated – with Urdu texts often noting it to be, Iman, Ittehad, Tanzeem and English text books listing the order with Unity first. The difference is subtle yet significant, and made me reflect on the evolution of our country since 1947.

Pakistan seemed more about the sum of its parts than divisive internal identities. Is… Continue

Truth

Truth is the easiest and simplest way out. A lie won’t change things (for the time being will add to your conversation the effect you want to add), but will make Ur heart uncomfortable at some stage in life, with a feeling to have told the truth pinching deeper inside u. If any body is told this, one gets upset as “why am I advised to speak honestly, I don’t lie” but we forget that simple and small “yes” and “no” can also be a part of a false statement. We can’t at once stop ourselves from our… Continue

Hope

All the rapture lives beyond, the eclipse between now and then, may be ahead of me lives some happiness, but how and when, which instant will land here and spill the drops of blissfulness.”????
