5 Greatest Fires in Human History

Fire is a good servant but a bad master and it really has an incredible power to wipe out anything that comes in its way. Fire is one of the important elements of the nature and it helps in the destruction and regeneration of natural objects and resources. Due to its magnificent power to destroy and regenerate many religions in the earlier times considered fire to be one of the channels through which one can communicate with God. There are many symbols and markings from various religions which tell us how people in the ancient period handled controlled fire while prayers and while attending various religious activities. If you look back in history you will find that there were several religions in Israel in the earlier times that considered fire to be holy. Similarly, there were many other Indo-European religions that had the same ideas about fire like Zoroastrianism who believed that fire is a symbol of purity and righteousness and truth. Even Hindus believed that fired had a healing property and therefore had various functions where Yagna was performed that included a fire.

However, fire has to be handled with a lot of care and attention because it can really change its role and can become life threatening. There are various ways in which fire can become a deadly messenger of death and can strike within fractions of seconds killing thousands of people instantly. Natural calamities like earthquakes and volcanoes are one of the common ways in which fire can strike your city and your home and engulf everything that comes in its way. Bombs and other arms and explosives are also manufactured in a way that the blast themselves and cause the same chain reaction which leads to fire which would burn and kill its target within a matter of seconds. Though, today we have the most sophisticated technology and techniques that would help us to handle and combat various fire situations, let us have a sneak peek into some of the greatest fires in human history.

Let’s go back into 1666 when the Great Fire of London swept through most of the city parts on September 5. The fire is said to be the most devastating fire in the history of mankind because it destroyed more than 70 thousand houses across London and more than 80 thousand people were trapped and killed in this enormous ball of fire. As per the records the fire started at the bakery of Thomas Farriner which was located on the Pudding Lane and shortly it began to spread across the west destroying the City of London. The firefighting techniques were brought into the action but since they were not prepared to handle such a monstrous fire they delayed in reaching the fire scene and the scale of fire went on increasing every moment. The Great Fire of London went on for 4 days in which many people had to run away from their homes, though many few were able to do that. Today, the Monument to the Great Fire of London stands at the northern end of London Bridge.

Almost 200 years after the Great Fire of London, a similar fire incident shook the United States of America when the city of Chicago found itself under the blazing inferno. The Great Chicago Fire happened on October 8, 1871 that killed nearly hundreds of innocent civilians and charred four square miles of the city. The fire is said to be the largest US disaster of the 19th Century. The fire began on early Sunday morning in a small shed behind 137 DeKoven Street and soon began to spread out. Since most of the building and structures in the city were made from wood, it took only minutes for the fire to spread out it wings and take everything under its flaming tongue. The city’s fire department didn’t arrive in time and the blaze got bigger and bigger and no human effort was able to extinguish the fire. Though, it is very difficult to predict what would be the real reason for such a massive fire, but as per the experts the fire began with smaller individual fires which eventually spread out because of increasing wind conditions and drought. The fire kept blazing for over a month as fire fighters and all other non-government organizations came together to rescue people living in areas near Yellowstone. It took around 9000 firefighters to calm down this fire and the government had to spend around $120 million to provide them with all the facilities and equipments to extinguish this massive fire that had damaged property worth $3 million.
