The impressive and expressive works of Brazilian-born, Berlin-based artist Harding Meyer are made even more so by their larger-than-life scale. As , Meyer fills his canvases with colorful, gestural brushstrokes that create simultaneously realistic and surreal images. The intimate and up-close portraits allow for a careful study of the human face and the fine details that make us who we are. At the same time, Meyer will add an extra feature or blend the background with skin tone so that our perception of this person is slightly skewed.
The subjects of Meyer’s paintings are anonymous and taken from his collection of digital and printed mass media. Perhaps this reference accounts for the fractured look of his images, which appear as a nod to the sometimes-glitchy digital age that we live in. Despite not knowing his subjects, he’s able to portray them in a way that feels familiar, like he has studied this person for years.
