In this stunning series that blends landscape and self-portrait photography, Finnish artist Elina Brotherus documents herself facing away from the camera and gazing out towards the world. The scenes, which are both meditative and sad, investigate the strong relationship between a single human figure and the surrounding environment.
Viewers will find themselves not only exploring the interesting backgrounds, but will also examine the subject as she peers across the land. Each scene sparks a curiosity about what the woman is thinking and where she might be headed. With no other clues provided to us, viewers are faced with the conflicting reality that we will never really have our questions answered.
The intriguing scenes have us moving back and forth between a visual adventure and an emotional journey. Brotherus explains, "In a way I provide the viewers with a blank screen, a surface on which to project their own feelings and desires. Most often my work deals with love and its side-effects; the absence or presence of it in its different forms."
