If you would like to become a graphic designer, you are faced with both opportunities as well as challenges. The good news is that the industry is growing and there is an increasing demand for skilled graphic designers. The bad news is that there are now many more skilled graphic designers looking for jobs, and the competition can be fierce. If your goal is to become a graphic designer, you may face some difficulty, but by taking certain steps, you can greatly increase your chances of finding a good job.
A graphic designer is generally placed in a marketing department, and his/her job is to create logos and other designs for companies, products, and advertisements. A good graphic designer should be able to create attractive, eye-catching designs that will help sell products. He/she must also have the interpersonal skills to sell the designs to company executives.
The first step one should take to become a graphic designer is to design! You aren't going to get hired with talent alone; however, your talent still needs to be on par with what the company is looking for. This means you should spend a good amount of time honing your skills and creating the best looking designs you can come up with.
If you don't already have a degree in either graphic design, advertising, fine arts, or computer graphics, you should strongly consider enrolling in a school to get one. Though some designers are able to find jobs without degrees, this is very rare and the market is increasingly saturated with designers who do have these qualifications. Having a degree does not prove you are a good designer, but it does send a message to a potential employer that you do have a base of knowledge and are serious about the job.
The other thing about getting a degree or taking classes is you will learn from professionals some of the tricks of the trade, as well as suggestions for finding a job. You should also get some training in the design programs that the professionals are using. Regardless of what your own preferences are, it is a good idea to get well trained in these programs because an employer may require you to use them.
In order to actually "break into" the industry and become a graphic designer, one of the best ways is to find an internship in the design department of a company. This will give you hands-on training, look great on your resume, and will also allow you to meet others who are doing what you would like to do. Use the opportunity to befriend them and ask them for advice in pursuing your own goals because they may have the resources you need to land your first job.
Though it is not easy to become a graphic designer, there are many ways to increase your qualifications and desirability. Most of all, be honest, sincere, and determined because these qualities will stand out to employers. These are not only qualities of a good designer, but of a good employee and coworker, which is what companies are really looking for.
