We spend our whole life in the pursuit of happiness. It is our inalienable right to do so. Happiness is elusive; just when we believe we have achieved it, the bar is raised, the dues increase, the rules change. Perhaps we are chasing the dream of happiness in all the wrong places. There are three minimum requirements for a happy life. If you never become rich or famous, if you never achieve the level of success you envision for yourself, you can strive to acquire the attributes of faith, hope and love. These three ingredients will sustain and increase your happiness.
Believe in yourself. Have faith you can achieve your dreams and fulfill your purpose. Believe in your God, your higher power, or whatever other reference you choose to acknowledge as something to rely on, to lift you up and carry you through hard times. Believe, and that faith will help you overcome whatever challenges life presents.
To be happy we must always have something to look forward to, something to hope for and reach toward. Hope is what keeps us moving forward in our life. If we give up hope, we have no reason for being. To live without a reason would be empty and despairing. When we have hope for the future, there is always the glimmer, the possibility our dreams will be fulfilled tomorrow. Hope nourishes our happiness.
Without love there is nothing. We are happy when we receive love, but the greatest happiness comes when giving love. There is no minimum daily requirement of love. We cannot overdose, or experience too much love. We cannot give all our love away, for the more we love, the more we are filled with love. Love is the great motivator, the driving force which propels our life from mundane and ordinary to happy and fulfilled. Love comes from within us and radiates outwardly to shower on others. As we spray others with love, we get splash back of love in return.
Faith, hope and love are the three minimum requirements for a happy life. Whatever our station in life and material circumstances are, by living in a state of faith, hope and love we will maximize our opportunities for contentment and happiness.
If our ship never comes in, if we never reach the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, if we never get to the sunny side of the street, the greener pastures, we can still be happy if we fill our life with faith hope and love.
