Peace of mind...

All living things have the same basic wish to be happy and avoid suffering..but very few people understand the real causes of happiness and suffering.

Happiness and sufferings are state of mind, and so their main cause cannot be found outside the mind.In recent years our understanding and control of the external world have increased considerably, and as aresult we have witnessed remarkable material progress; but there has not been a corresponding increase in human happiness. there is no less suffering in the world today, and there are no fewer p[roblems, indeed, it could be said that there are now more problems and greater happiness than ever before. this shows that the solution to our problems, and to those of society as a whole, does not lie in knowledge or control of the external world.

Why is this?

Happiness and suffering are states of mind , and so there main causes cannot be found outside the mind. The real source of happiness is inner peace. If our mind is peaceful, we shall be happy all the time regardless of external conditions, but if it is disturbed or troubled in any way, we shall never be happy, no matter how good our external conditions may be..

What is peace of mind?

It is a state of inner calmness and trnquility, together with a sense of freedom, when thoughts and worries cease, and there is no stress, strain or fear. such moments are not so rare. They may be experienced while being engaged in some kind of an absorbing or interesting activity, such as while watching an interesting movie or T.V program, while being with someone you love or while lying on the sand at the beach.....such similar activities take away the mind from its usual thoughts and worries, and bring some temporary inner peace.

The question is how to bring more peace of mind into our life, and more importantly, how to experience it in times of trouble.

Here are few simple things taht can help you...

  • Reduce the the amount of time you read the newspaper or watch the news on T.V.
  • Stay away from negative conversation and from negative people.
  • Dont hold grudges. learn to forget and forgive. nurturing ill feelings and grievances hurts you and causes lack of sleep.
  • Dont be jealous of others. being jealous means that you have low self esteem and consider yourself inferior to others. this again causes lack of inner peace.
  • Accept what cannot be changed. this saves alot of time, energy and worries.
  • Every day we face numerous inconvieniences, irritations and situations that are beyond our control. if we can change them, that's fine. but this is not alwayspossible. We must learnto put up with such things and accept them cheerfully.
  • Learn to be more patient and tolerant with people and events.
  • Tell God in prayer what you feel, need and want.
  • change yourself according to the environment.
  • do not bite more than you chew. we often tend to take more responsibilities that we are capable to carry out. this is done to satisfy our ego. know your limitations. spend your time on prayers, introspection and meditations.
  • Meditate regularly. This is the highest state of the peace of mind.
  • An empty mind is devil's workshop. all evil's deeds start in the mind. keep your mind something in positive, something worthwhile. so never leave the mind vacant.

May ALLAH give peaceof mind to all human being..... ameen
